Where to Find Your NY Driver’s License Document Number
Published Dec 13, 2021
The document number on license of a driver or identification document card uniquely identifies it. Unlike your driver’s license or identification number, which uniquely identifies you, your NY driver’s license document number is unique to that particular license or identification card. When you renew it, this number changes since you receive a new card from the DMV; nevertheless, your license number (license ID) remains the same.
Where Do I Find My NY Driver’s License Document Number?
Your document number on NY’s license might be located in various locations, depending on the type of ID and the date of issue. If your license or identification card were issued AFTER January 28, 2014, it would have a document number on the back; if it were issued PRIOR to that date, it would have a document number in the lower right corner of the front of the card.
The document number is a combination of numbers and letters that can be between eight and ten characters in length. Because your license number is nine digits long and entirely composed of numbers, this is an easy way to identify them apart. Additionally, you can readily distinguish them since your ID number will typically be on its own line and contain spaces every three digits, whereas your document number will have no spaces.
What Is the Purpose of My Document Number?
You do not need to enter your document number in order to take online vision exams for driving. You are only required to provide the number on the back of your driver’s license. When you log into your MyDMV account online, you’ll enter your NY driver’s license document number. When you create your MyDMV account for the first time, you will be prompted to provide both your 9-digit identification number and your document number. If you are registering to vote, you will also require your document number.
When you renew your driver’s license online, the DMV allows you to register to vote. Bear in mind that if you’ve misplaced your ID or license and sought a replacement, the document number on your replacement card will change from the one on your original card.
