Do You Need A Passport To Go On A Cruise Vacation?

Published April 5, 2021
A long vacation cruise can be what you need to get away from all the stress. Long days and unlimited fun, there’s no maximum on the activities you can enjoy.
However, plenty of people question if they need their passports to go on a cruise. Some cruises require them, but some ports don’t. It’s a little bit confusing, but we’re going to explain in a bit.
What is a Cruise Vacation?
A cruise vacation is going on a vacation on a ship. Imagine a hotel or a resort that’s floating and traveling from one destination to another.
These cruise ships offer a wide range of activities and also come with restaurants, pools, casinos, bars, and so much more. Cruise vacations are available worldwide, with the popular ones in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean.

Do Cruise Ships Require a Passport?
Although there are cruises that don’t require a passport, you should always have it ready when you’re traveling. You never know when an emergency ship docking might happen due to health or safety concerns. Although the Titanic situation might not happen again with the latest technology, it never hurts to be too prepared.
Cruises that Require a Passport
Almost all cruises require a passport or government-issued photos with proof of citizenship. Trips to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida, and Bermuda require these documents. Voyages to the Pacific Coastal, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Canada, and New England also require you to bring a passport.
The proofs of citizenship can include:
- your original certificate of U.S. naturalization,
- Or your original certificate of U.S. citizenship.
- A state-certified U.S. birth certificate.
- U.S. Consular report of your birth abroad.
Cruises that don’t Require a Passport
Some cruises don’t require you to have a passport. One of the best cruises that don’t need them is the Hawaii inter-island cruise.
If your ship sails beyond the islands of Hawaii, you’ll need a government-issued photo I.D such as your driver’s license.
You can also go to Puerto Rico, which is under the U.S. commonwealth. United States citizens can go cruising there as well as its surrounding islands without a passport.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are also fair game for U.S. citizens without a passport. You can visit the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas, and St. John. However, you are not allowed to visit the neighboring British Virgin Islands.
An Alaskan cruise doesn’t require you to have your passport since it is an American state. If your cruise starts in Canada, only then will you need to have your documents.
It never hurts to be prepared, so always carry your passport or proof of citizenship. That way, you can be ready for any emergencies that might happen.
