Missouri Birth Certificate Types
- Short Form Birth Certificate – Also known as an abstract, the short form birth certificate is an abbreviated version of the original certificate. It’s officially titled a “birth certification” and is a traditional-looking copy with colored purposes, capable of fulfilling virtually all legal purposes.
- Long Form Birth Certificate (Original Certificate) – The long form birth certificate or “original” is also called a “Certificate of Live Birth.” It is a copy of the original certificate, containing information, such as the time of birth. This type of birth certificate is generally not needed to fulfill most legal purposes, so you may opt for the short form instead.

Who Can Receive A Copy?
Under Missouri law, birth certificates of births less than 100 years old are considered “closed records.” Only individuals showing a legitimate and tangible interest may be issued certified copies of birth certificates upon paying the appropriate fees, providing proof of identification, and filling out the application form:
