Who Can Receive A Copy?

Under Mississippi law, birth certificates of births less than 100 years old are considered “closed records.” Only individuals showing a legitimate and tangible interest may be issued certified copies of birth certificates upon paying the appropriate fees, providing proof of identification, and completely filling out the application form:

The individual whose name appears on the birth certificate (registrant), if of legal age

The registrant's child/ren, spouse, or granpdarent/s (of legal age)

Parents whose names appears on the record

Legal guardian (with guardianship papers)

Legal representative (with notarized representative documents)

Licensed adoption agencies working within the statutory authority of §93-17-205

Other people by court order(s) (must present a certified copy of the court order explicitly naming the person)

For Genealogy purposes: the applicant must state genealogy as the purpose of the certificate. They must also prove their relationship to the registrant before being issued a plain paper copy (not for legal purposes)
