Who Can Receive A Copy?

Under Indiana law, birth certificates are not public records, and only those with direct interest may be issued certified copies of birth certificates. “Direct interest” refers to a documented and verifiable legal and financial interest or immediate kinship with the registrant (the person whose name appears on the certificate). Depending on the individual’s interest in obtaining a copy of a birth certificate, supporting documents may be needed. The following individuals may qualify as applicants for birth certificates:

The registrant (name on the birth certificate)

Mother or father as shown on the record

Grandparent, aunt, or uncle (must show proof of relationship)

Sibling, child, or grandchild (must be at least 18 years old and show proof of relationship)

Spouse (must show proof of marriage)

Step-parent of registrant (with valid ID and proof of marriage)

Court-appointed legal guardian (with ID and official guardianship papers)

An attorney representing the registrant – must have ID for self and provide a document with direct interest spelled out on letterhead or court documents

Genealogy – the registrant must be over 75 years old and deceased (with proof of death)

Social Agency (with work ID and other official documents)

State and Federal Agencies (with work ID and other official documents)
