Who Can Receive A Copy?

Under Alabama law, birth certificates are confidential records for births that occurred in the past 125 years. However, the following people may obtain certified copies of a birth certificate after paying the proper fees and providing necessary documents:

The registrant (name on the birth certificate) if of legal age (18)

Parents on the birth record

Legal guardian (with guardianship papers)

A legal representative of the individuals above (with legal documentation)

By court order (with a copy of the court order)

In the event of the registrant's death, family members of legal age must present the death certificate to get a copy of the birth certificate.
