Illinois Birth Certificates From Illinois Department of Public Health Division of Vital Records

Illinois Birth Certificate Types

Illinois has two birth certificates, both applicable for legal purposes.

Detailed Birth Certificate - This certified copy of an Illinois birth certificate will contain the embossed seal of Illinois. It is typically acceptable for most legal purposes, including proof of citizenship, school enrollment, personal identification, passports, social security, and employment. This variation will contain all the information collected at the time of birth (information has varied throughout the years). These birth certificates are available for all births that occurred in the state of Illinois from 1916 to the present day.

Abridged Birth Certificate - This version is a certified abstract, which may or may not contain the names of the registrant’s parents, depending on the year. This birth certificate is still a legal document that may serve as proof of identity. Still, it will not be applicable as a requirement for passports unless both parents’ names are explicitly listed. These birth certificates are available for all births that occurred in the state of Illinois from 1916 to the present day.
