Who can order?

Under North Dakota law, birth certificates of births less than 100 years old are considered “closed records.” Only individuals showing a legitimate and tangible interest may be issued certified copies of birth certificates upon paying the appropriate fees, providing proof of identification, and filling out the application form:

The individual whose name appears on the birth certificate (registrant, if at least 16 years old

The registrant’s immediate family: mother, father (if listed)

A court order with the registrant’s name and birthdate indicated

Other legal documentation naming you as an authorized representative of the registrant or their parents
