Who can order?

Under Louisiana law, birth certificates are “closed records,” meaning they are not accessible by the public. Only the following individuals may be issued certified copies of birth certificates upon paying the appropriate fees, providing proof of identification, and completely filling out the application form:

The person whose name appears on the document (registrant)

The current spouse of the registrant

Mother or father of the registrant

An adult child of the registrant (at least 18 years old)

By court order (with a copy of the court order)

Sister/brother of the registrant

Grandmother or grandfather of the registrant

A grandchild of the registrant

An attorney representing one of the individuals above with a signed contract of representation or authorization
